Our University museum is developing a similar program for incoming freshmen to get familiar with the local community, the campus and its 140 year history. Our campus is one of a few universities participating in the iKnow Initiative from Apple, so the students all have GPS-able iPhones. Perfect for NO budget! Do you have any recommendations/resources about doing this on a college campus?

Thanks again!
Erinerinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11438813924207710199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37032121.post-12681626536704798852008-08-26T04:27:00.000-07:002008-08-26T04:27:00.000-07:00G'day Nina,We found a geocache on one of our outsi...G'day Nina,

We found a geocache on one of our outside exhibits at Questacon! (checkout letterboxing.org for more info).

I work at a museum and we have letterboxing set up, it has brought people to the museum that wouldn't normally come, so its pretty fun for them and they get to look aroound while they are here!Scott Morrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12217679561632322299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37032121.post-88410004634018520722008-08-03T20:45:00.000-07:002008-08-03T20:45:00.000-07:00I love geocaching! My dad got into in a couple of months ago and so we all pitched in and bought him a hand held GPS receiver for his birthday, and then we became addicted too! The most fun is to go out with my 8 year old cousin and "treasure hunt." We have found some interesting things in geocaches, or been taken to interesting locations. I feel geocaching is about exploring your local surroundings (or not so local surroundings) in a way you never would have before. For example, we were looking for a geocache placed in a howitzer cannon at a local park. I have driven by that location a million times and never noticed it was a Vietnam war memorial. It was nice to fine the geocache, but even nicer to learn something new about my community that I may have kept passing by otherwise. In museums geocaches could be used as a sort of "self-guided" tour. The visitor could borrow a GPS unit and a list of geocache coordinates on the museum grounds. They would then be able to search the museum grounds for the geocaches, and in the process discover exhibits, instillations or other museum assets that they may have otherwise passed by.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
